Make Way for our Duckling
Say hello to Lydia our rescued duckling, she was found in our backyard running around our pool, her mother - or what we shall say is left of her- was found near by the nest torn apart , I suspect a fox made a late night visit. There was also another duckling , -we had them both for a few days- but the other one, sadly, did not make it. But Lydia is thriving and is quite a funny little duck. She eats eats and eats, she loves to swim in our make shift kiddie pond for her. I had no idea that ducks did not know how to swim and actually have to learn. She is doing wonderfully and in four-six weeks will mostly be out on her own and hopefully still hanging around with us.
Every year we do some sort of summer project with the kids and this sort of fell in to our laps. Madeline has wanted to raise a duck and has been praying for it so I suspect Jesus had a hand in this one showing up. .We have spent a lot of time on the internet looking up info on baby ducks and talking to a local farm that rasies ducks, my dear hubby had to go and buy a 50lb bag of duckling food. that just makes me laugh. but hey what she doesn;t eat the other ducks around here will. As I have said we are on the waterfront and have lots of ducks, geese, swans etc around so someone will eat it all.
Anyhow we will add photos as we can.
Lydia out exploring, the world around her playing in puddles and eating alot of bugs and berries, and greens, being a duck:-) I just hope when they time comes when she is wondering around more on her own, the kids can let her go. We have had neighbors raise many ducks and they always eventually find the river- we live on the water- and go off on their own, but, they always come back .
